Vendors use that one label for three different jobs, though. Some tools match bank and card lines inside your ledger, some match millions of transactions against rules before the books close, and some certify balance sheet accounts with a preparer, a reviewer and attached support.

We compared seven tools for controllers and finance leads: Xero, Numeric, FloQast, ReconArt, Adra by Trintech, BlackLine and HighRadius. Most "best account reconciliation software" lists in the search results come from vendors or agencies that rank their own product or a partner first. This one doesn't. Our own product tracks close tasks and sits outside the ranking as a marked row. For each tool we read the pricing or edition page, a product page for reconciliation, help or documentation where it was public, and its G2 reviews, all in October 2026.

<nav It takes the balance in your general ledger, takes the balance from an independent source such as a bank statement, a subledger or a schedule, and shows the difference together with the items that explain it. An item that stays unexplained gets an owner and an age. When the account ties, the preparer signs off and a reviewer approves, and the support stays attached for the auditor.

The software does four things that a spreadsheet does badly at scale:

Imports balances and transactions from the ERP, banks, card processors and files, so nobody retypes a statement.

Matches transactions on rules such as amount, date and reference, including one-to-many and many-to-many matches, and leaves the exceptions for a person.

Certifies balance sheet accounts with a preparer, a reviewer, a materiality threshold and a due date, and alerts the owner if the ledger changes after sign-off.

Posts adjusting journal entries for the differences it finds, with approvals, either itself or by handing them to the ERP.

<ol class="ok-flow class="wp-block-paragraph">If your ledger already reconciles bank feeds, the first question is whether you need a second tool at all. Spendesk's FAQ asks exactly this question, and Pilot's list of bank reconciliation software starts with QuickBooks Online and Xero. For bank and card accounts the ledger's own reconciliation is often enough, and a dedicated tool earns its cost only when the work spills beyond bank lines.

Xero

Xero

Xero is a cloud accounting ledger whose bank feeds flow into a reconcile screen. Its JAX feature reconciles transactions automatically using four methods (Rule, Match, Memory, Prediction) and asks you to review only what it is unsure about.

Accounting ledger with built-in bank reconciliation★★★★☆ 4.4 · 1,636 G2 reviews

Xero fits a team whose ledger is already Xero and whose reconciliation job is matching bank and card transactions to the books.

Your bank transactions flow into Xero through bank feeds. On the Growing and Established plans, JAX reconciles them automatically using four methods. Rule applies one of your bank rules. Match pairs a bank transaction with an existing Xero record. Memory repeats how you reconciled similar transactions before. Prediction suggests a match based on how other Xero users reconciled similar ones. When JAX is highly confident it matches, and when it isn't it suggests a match and leaves the final say to you. Bank rules and bulk coding still work alongside it. Per-user fees don't exist: prices are per plan.

That covers one job well. The Xero pages we read describe reconciling bank transactions, not account-by-account balance sheet certification with a preparer, a reviewer and attached support. A controller who needs that sign-off trail pairs Xero with a close tool; Numeric and FloQast both list Xero as a supported ERP. Plan details above come from Xero's US pricing page and bank reconciliation page, both checked October 21, 2026. Vendors use it for tools that reconcile bank and card accounts, payments, intercompany balances and balance sheet accounts, and the tools above cover those jobs. The term "financial close software" is wider still: it adds the close checklist, journal entries, flux analysis and consolidation around the reconciliations. If your real problem is the close calendar rather than the matching, read our guide to financial close software, which compares eight close platforms.

How does your ERP change the shortlist?

The ERP you run narrows an account reconciliation software shortlist faster than any feature. It runs recurring close checklists with evidence attachments, preparer and reviewer sign-off and reminders, so you can see which reconciliations are signed off and what support is missing. It doesn't reconcile, post entries or connect to your ledger, and it isn't a substitute for the tools above once you need matching.

How do you choose account reconciliation software?

Ask these questions before a demo, and ask the vendor to show the answer on your own data:

Which reconciliation job is the bottleneck: matching, certification or posting?

Which ERP and bank formats must it read, and is the connector certified or a file upload?

How does it treat an account that ties but changes after sign-off?

Can the preparer and the reviewer be different people, and does the tool enforce it?

Where do the workpapers and support live, and can an auditor see them without a login for each tool?

What is in the base package, and what needs an upgrade?

Who configures rules afterwards: your team or the vendor?

Before the demo Bring one month of real bank lines and ten balance sheet accounts, including one that never ties.
